Titanic Memorial Cruise, 2012 |
As always, I switched on news channels today morning on my TV and got a news worth talking; M S Balmoral named as Titanic Memorial Cruise is set to hit the disaster site where Titanic hit an iceberg on April 15, 1912 and sunk in the deep ocean. MS Balmoral strated its journey from the Southampton Port and carrying 1,309 passengers - exactly the same number as were on the unfortunate Titanic - to mark the centenary of the sinking of the White Star liner. Passengers on the board are from 20 different countries and they have paid a huge price for the cruising and it is up to £6,000 each depending on which class they are travelling. Some of the passengers are the relatives of those who died aboard the Titanic when it hit an iceberg hundred years ago. The memorial cruise is expected to reach New York City - the Titanic’s planned destination on April 19 after a 12-night journey during which passengers would be served from a “Titanic menu”. A memorial ceremony is also planned at the site of the disaster during this journey.
In the same connection, a website called ‘TITANIC MEMORABILIA’ (http://titanicmemorialcruise.co.uk/) has kept unique collection of items commemorating this fascinating ship for sale. The popular items are the Titanic Memorial Cruise Book, £5 royal mint coin & Titanic Bellboy Bear. Although the managing director of the company organizing Titanic Memorial Cruise, Miles Morgan opined that the event is intended to be “a sympathetic memorial to the passengers and crew who lost their lives.” I strongly feel that this event is going to start a new tradition of “disaster tourism”. The bottom line is very simple; Marketers always make money either it is celebration or beratement.
